강성철 테크니션_ '기술자'에서 '장인'으로
벌써 세공대에 앉아 작업을 시작한 지 20년이 되어간다.
아버지가 이 직업을 가지고 걸어오신 것을 어려서부터 보아왔지만, 운명적으로 같은 일을 한다는 생각은 하지 않았다.
새로운 것을 좋아하는 성격을 가진 나에게 차분하고 조용하게 작업을 하는 기술자로서의 모습이 어울리진 않았지만, 오랜 시간 동안 기술을 익히고 경험이 쌓아가며 나는 또 다른 나의 모습으로 일을 할 수 있게 되었다. 그렇게 매일매일 같은 하루를 보내고 있을 때쯤 '지금’에서 일을 할 수 있는 기회가 찾아왔다.
2년 동안은 '지금’에서 기술교류를 이어가며 기존의 방법을 벗어나 새로운 방법을 배우기도 하며 함께 작업하는 방식들을 연구했다. 완성에만 집중하는 것이 아닌 만들어지는 과정에 큰 의미를 두는 제작 방식이 인상적이었다.
처음에는 적응하기가 힘들었고, 작업 방식에서 이해가 안 가는 부분도 많았다. 15년을 넘는 기간 동안 작업들을 해오며 나름 전문가라 생각해왔던 터라, 기존의 방식들과 다른 방식들에 많은 스트레스를 받기도 했다.
하지만 새로운 것에 대해 호기심이 많던 나는, 내가 오랫동안 가졌던 이 직업에서 느낄 수 없던 새로운 방식의 결과물들을 경험하며 즐거움을 느꼈고 그 방법들을 이해하고 존중하게 되었다.
스튜디오 멤버들 또한, 내가 가진 기술을 존중해 주며 멤버들 모두 '장인'으로서의 미래를 함께 맞이하자는 이야기를 해주었을 때, 이곳의 일원으로 오랜 시간 동안 함께 하고 싶다는 생각이 들었다.
이제는 나 역시 '기술자'에서 '장인'으로 스스로 인정할 수 있는 날이 오길 바라며, 그날이 기다려진다.

It is already almost 20 years since I started to work sitting at my lapidary workbench. Since I was a kid I have seen my father walking the path of his life with this job, but never thought my destiny led me to do the same job.
The image of a technician working calmly and quietly did not befit my personal preference for new things, but I managed to set another aspect of mine as a worker skilled and experienced for a long time. Around the time I was spending such a same routine day by day, an opportunity knocked that I could work for “JIGUM.”.
IFor the two years of working at JIGUM, I have continued technical exchanges with other members, learning new methods beyond my previous ones and researching the ways of working together. I was impressed by the modus operandi of JIGUM that puts much significance on the process of creation, not just focusing on completion.
It was hard at first to adapt myself to this practice, and many things of the working method were beyond my comprehension. As I had thought of myself as a professional with over 15 years’ working experience, I was sometimes stressed by such methods different from what I had known before.
Still, I was so curious of something new that I felt joy at experiencing the products created in new ways which I had never sensed throughout my long career before. So I came to understand and respect such new methods.
When the studio members, respecting my own techniques, also told me that all of us would welcome together our future of “artisans,” I found myself wishing to remain a member of this studio for a long time.
Now I, too, wish the day will come when I will acknowledge myself as an “artisan,” not just a “technician.” I am looking forward to that day.
